COZAD – The B-4 district wrestling tournament is in full swing at Cozad High School this weekend.
The 12-team tournament brings in schools from as far as Scottsbluff, as two Dawson County schools jockey for state tournament berths.
Lexington and Cozad will represent Class B, while Overton and Elwood will represent Class D at their respective tournament, taking place in Amherst.
The first day will consist of the first session of matches, with the championships to follow on Saturday morning.
Each district will take the top four placers out of each weight class. The top four will then wrestle at the Qwest Center in Omaha for a chance to be crowned state champion.
Ones to watch at the district tournaments will be the Cozad Haymakers, which could easily send up to seven wrestlers to the state tournament. From Lexington, Danny Ibarra at 125 lbs., Rolando Gonzalez at 145 lbs. and Bill Reynoso at 152 lbs. will look to make trips to Omaha.
From Elwood, Michael Daake, Walter Flint, Will Rahjes, Hunter Ertz and Dillon Tiede look to have the upper hand after a successful FKC tournament. For Overton, Ethan Enochs is one of many Eagles that could make it to Omaha this weekend.
Results of the district tournaments will be in the Feb. 17 issue of the Clipper-Herald.
