Overton takes it to Gibbon in season finale

February 23, 2010

GIBBON – The girls weren’t so lucky when they took on the Gibbon Buffaloes earlier in the season. So how would the boys fare as they traveled to Buffalo country in their regular season finale?
Junior Jacob Olmstead and senior Jared Shafer put up identical numbers to lead the third-ranked Eagles to a 70-48 blowout of Gibbon Friday evening.
The game wasn’t even close to begin with, as Overton immediately took control, leading 12-5 after the first quarter. The offense began tearing apart the Gibbon defense, outscoring the Buffs 25-11 in the second quarter to take a comfortable 37-16 advantage into the locker room.
Gibbon came out fighting in the second half, holding Overton to just 10 points in the third to cut the lead under 20 points at 47-30. The lead was way too much for Gibbon to overcome as Overton still managed to put up 23 points in the final eight minutes to coast for the victory.
Overton shot the ball well all game long, finishing with a blistering 57 percent from the field, including 46 percent (5 of 11) from the three-point line.
Gibbon struggled to find the basket all night long, shooting only 27 percent (15-56) from the field.
The Eagles shot 11 of 20 (55 percent) from the charity stripe, while Gibbon was ice cold, going 14 of 31 (45 percent).
Olmstead and Shafer teamed up to score 40 of the team’s 70 points on the night, with each scoring 20. Also, both Eagles’ each had seven rebounds in the victory, as Overton improved to 16-3 on the season. Gibbon falls to 3-15 on the year.
Overton obtained the No. 1 seed going into the D1-10 sub-district tournament that will take place this week in Gothenburg. The Eagles play the winner of the Elwood-Ansley match-up that took place Monday night. Full district wrap-up will be in the Saturday issue of the Clipper-Herald.
