COZAD – The sun was shining brightly on Haymaker Memorial Field Tuesday, as the Cozad track team hosted a triangular with Callaway and Brady.
The triangular was actually a quadrangular with rival Gothenburg supposed to be in attendance, but the Swedes backed out leaving just three.
The Haymaker boys’ put on a good display during warm afternoon, taking eight events.
Senior Evan Worrell took second overall in the long jump, with a leap of 17 feet, 11 inches, just three inches shy of first place jumper Miller Russel of Brady. Worrell also took third place in the 100-meter dash, sprinting in a time of 11.86 seconds.
Alec Foster also was a impact player, taking two medals in the hurdles events, taking first place in the 100-meter high hurdles, with a time of 16 seconds. Foster took second place in the 300- meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 44 seconds, just .56 seconds slower than first place Glendy Logan of Callaway.
Junior Jed Paulsen was the star of the day for the Haymakers, as Paulsen took home three first-place finishes. Paulsen first took the gold in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.56 seconds, almost a second faster than second place. Paulsen also took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.64 seconds, barely beating out Callaway’s Ellis Zane by just .09 seconds. Finally, Paulsen took first place in the high jump, with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches.
In a Callaway filled race, Luis Arevala was able to finish fourth overall in the 400-meter dash, running in a time of 1:02.2.
The Haymakers were also dominant in the longer distance events, taking two first-place finishes and one second place finish.
Zach Brown took the 3200-meter run with a time of 12:18, 41 seconds faster than second place. Dereck Rosas was able to beat out teammate Cole Hartman in the 1600-meter run, as Rosas ran in a time of 5:07, while Hartman ran in 5:23.
Jesus Alvarado ran a good 800-meter dash, finishing in second place with a time of 2:17.
Trey Stombaugh was able to pull out a gold and silver medal, as he took first place in the triple jump with a bound of 36 feet, 7 inches, beating out the rest of the pack by almost four feet. Stombaugh was also able to take second place in the shot put with a throw of 36 feet, 8 inches.
Junior Pedro Garcia was the winner of the discus throw event, with a hurl of 122 feet, 2 ½ inches. Daniel Chacon was able to take third place overall in the discus with a throw of 115 feet, 6 inches.
Finally in the relay events, Cozad was able to take first place in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 48.1 seconds. The Haymakers also took third place in the 4×400 relay with a time of 4:06.
The ladies side was all Cozad as the Lady Haymakers took 12 events on the day.
Autym Malcom was the winner of the long jump, and the triple jump while Tierney Molden took first in the pole vault.
Kylee Griffis was a dual gold medalist, taking first in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
Cozad nearly swept the mile run as five of the six placers were Haymakers, led by Jessica Vazquez in first place.
The Carly’s again were dominant in the field events as Carlie Pinkelman took first in the discus with a throw of 130 feet, 4 inches, while Carly Henry took second with a throw of 123 feet, 9 inches.
Henry however took the shot put event, with a heave of 45 feet, 1/4 inches. Pinkelman took second place with a throw of 43 feet, 9 1/4 inches.
The Haymaker track teams will be in action again on Saturday, April 3, when they travel to Ogallala for the Ogallala Invite.
The invite is set to begin at 9:30 MST.
