VALENTINE – The Cozad Lady Haymakers’ volleyball team made some giant steps during the Valentine volleyball tournament on Saturday.
Unfortunately, it didn’t lead to any wins.
The Lady Makers won sets in their final two matches over the weekend, but were unable to close the match, as Cozad fell to 0-21 on the season after going 0-3 at the Valentine Tourna-ment.
In Cozad’s opening match against Chadron, it was a rough start for the Lady Makers, as the Cardinals rolled through the red and black in straight sets, winning 25-12, 25-12.
Madison Hueftle had a team-high four kills, while Nicole Zook recorded three kills and Haley Montgomery had two kills.
Montgomery, along with Payden Knudsen each recorded one block each, and Kaylea Reyes dished up seven assists.
In the Haymakers second match of the tournament against Valentine, Cozad took the first set, but was unable to close the door on the Badgers, as the wheels slowly began to fall off in the later sets. Valentine won the next two sets, taking the match 21-25, 25-15, 25-5.
Molly Thramer had three ace serves, while Reyes and Knudsen each recorded one ace serve.
Hueftle once again led all hitters, throwing down six kills, while Thramer tallied five kills and Montgomery and Zook each recorded four kills. Zook and Hueftle combined for a total of nine digs in the loss.
Reyes handed out 13 assists, while Hueftle notched four and Knudsen had two.
In the Haymakers final game of the day, Cozad once again took the first set from the Bulldogs, but were unable to leash Ainsworth for good, as the Lady Dogs fought back to steal the final two sets, thwarting the Haymakers’ chance for their first win of the season, winning 20-25, 25-22, 25-20.
Montgomery led with a team-high eight kills, while Hueftle and Zook each tallied six kills and Reyes notched four. Hueftle also had four blocks and three digs, while Reyes contributed again with 17 assists.
Cozad took on the Lady Tigers of Hastings (9-15) Tuesday night. Results will be in the Saturday issue of the Clipper-Herald.
